The main aim of this website is to make a contribution towards the wider appreciation of modern Welsh-language poetry through English and/or Dutch translations of texts by myself, Mary Burdett-Jones, Mererid Hopwood, Annes Glynn and, it is hoped, others, the Dutch being the work of Margriet Boleij with the assistance of MBJ. Texts of poems by MBJ not published in the volume Lluniadau (Ystwyth Books, Aberystwyth, 2020, ISBN 978 1 78461 900 8) are gathered here, together with translations of German poetry into Welsh additional to those pubished in Lluniadau, as well as a couple of translations of Dutch poems into Welsh made with the assistance of Margriet Boleij. We are grateful to Mererid Hopwood for permission to publish these Dutch translations of her work here. I am grateful to Alun Gwynedd Jones for suggesting that the English translations be presented as prose poems. There are links where possible to the original German and Dutch texts, also to relevant images, etc.
The Welsh language is viewed as the starting point, thus under Cerddi when using a PC there will be one or more flags denoting the language(s), e.g. English, Dutch, into which it has been translated, where it will appear under Poems, Gedichten. A translation of a poem into Welsh, e.g. from German or Dutch, will be under Cyfieithiadau. To read the poem in the original language, either via a link or a reference to a printed work, click on the appropriate flag. When using a mobile choose the appropriate language from the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines at the top right hand corner).
I thank my brother Richard Burdett for designing the website and in so doing venturing beyond his French into Welsh, Dutch and German, and for his patient tuition as I learnt how to upload the texts. His comments on my poems sparked the sequence of poems ‘The poet’s profession’.
